Continuous Improvement

Deming developed the concept of Continuous Improvement in the 1950s with his Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. The concept is to:

  • Plan what you need to do to achieve your goals
  • Do the action/activity
  • Check or review that the action/activity was successful
  • Act on the results of the review

This concept has been further developed recently and is central to the philosophy and practice of Business Excellence. Fundamentally the improvements that need to be made are to business processes; any approach to continuous improvement that is not so grounded is unlikely to succeed for very long. The techniques involved provide the basis for developing a culture of continuous improvement in which everyone in the organisation is motivated to work towards steadily improving performance in all areas of activity. The Support Group has successfully developed and helped a number of organisations, in both the private and public sectors, to introduce and maintain continuous improvement programmes
