Benchmarking

The management of Continuous Improvement in an organisation by measured comparison with either:

  • its own past performance,
  • the average performance of a group of similar organisations, or
  • the 'best in class' in its own area of activity.

Improvements that can be achieved by benchmarking performance metrics are likely to be limited; much greater improvement can be achieved by benchmarking processes so as to understand how success has been achieved.
